Difference Between "IPFS remote" and Direct IPFS Pinning Service API Usage?

Is there a distinction between utilizing "ipfs remote" commands/endpoints for remote IPFS pinning and directly using a IPFS pinning service's API? Are the "ipfs remote" commands merely a wrapper for the REST APIs of pinning services, or is there an underlying difference in functionality?

The "ipfs pin remote" commands use the pinning service API to pin content on a remote pinning service. It essentially serves as a convenient interface to interact with the underlying REST APIs of pinning services.
