Is IPFS writable for storing data in a decentralized manner?

I am curious to know if IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) allows for data to be written and stored in a decentralized manner. I have heard about its ability to retrieve and share files, but I am unsure if it supports writing and updating data. Can someone please clarify if IPFS is writable and how it can be utilized for storing data in a decentralized manner? Thank you in advance for your insights.

IPFS is better thought of as a distributed HTTP. CIDs are deterministic, if two users have the same data they can generate the exact same CID. The deduplication properties come from this very fact: If you had two directories on the same node and each directory contained identical copies of file A, the node will just see file A as the same CID, and therefor the same data, not storing it twice. Like how you can't really "write to HTTP" you can't really "write to IPFS" either as IPFS is a protocol for serving content. (4min quick breakdown www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZnFmlXHHzg)

The InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) is a protocol, hypermedia and file sharing peer-to-peer network for storing and sharing data in a distributed file system.
