Expert Q&A

Can I download a file after uploading on IPFS?

I recently uploaded a file using IPFS and I'm wondering if shutting down IPFS would make the file inaccessible for download. Can someone confirm if this is the case? I want to ensure that once I shut down IPFS, the file cannot be accessed by others. Thank you for your assistance.

If you are the last node hosting the file, then yes, the file will only be available if you continue to host it. However, if you have pinned the file somewhere else, such as on a second server that you host or a pinning service, then the other nodes in the network will also be able to serve the file.

To clarify, pinning refers to the act of storing a copy of a file on multiple nodes in a distributed network. This ensures that the file remains available even if the original hosting node goes offline. By pinning the file on another server or using a pinning service, you are essentially creating redundancy and allowing other nodes to serve the file in case the original hosting node becomes unavailable.

In summary, if you are the last node hosting the file, it will only be available as long as you continue to host it. However, if you have pinned the file elsewhere, other nodes in the network will also be able to serve the file, ensuring its availability even if the original hosting node goes offline.
